Founded in 2021 in Trapani, Sicily, BeeHive is not just a coworking space; it is a movement aimed at reducing inequalities between Northern and Southern Italy. Co-founded by Sergio Parisi, BeeHive focuses on empowering people by promoting ‘South Working’ and providing opportunities for those who want to stay and work in Sicily. Sergio and his team have created a social enterprise model designed to bring work opportunities and economic growth to a part of Italy that has historically faced fewer prospects.

Creating Opportunities in the South
BeeHive was founded with a clear mission—to create value in the south by fostering professional and educational opportunities for local people. In Sergio’s words, “The goal is to allow people the choice to stay, study, and work in Sicily.” Often, young people are forced to move north in search of opportunities, but BeeHive aims to change this by creating fertile ground for companies to invest in and open branches in Southern Italy.
By inviting companies from Northern Italy to establish operations in their coworking spaces, BeeHive directly tackles the imbalance of job availability between the north and the south. This initiative has already led to significant positive outcomes, with numerous northern companies opening branches in Trapani and employing dozens of young people. As of today, BeeHive operates around 100 workstations and has plans for further expansion, demonstrating the demand for their inclusive coworking model.
A Social Enterprise Driving Impact
BeeHive’s social impact is multifaceted. First, it reduces socio-economic inequalities by creating jobs where opportunities are scarce. Sergio and his team work to match talented individuals in the south with companies seeking skilled employees, creating a bridge between supply and demand. Additionally, BeeHive supports marginalized groups by providing training courses and encouraging companies to hire from these vulnerable segments. BeeHive aims to be a “demilitarized zone,” where companies are encouraged to open up to diverse talents and break down taboos that often create barriers.
The coworking spaces themselves are designed to be inclusive environments that foster collaboration and innovation. BeeHive offers more than just a place to work; it offers a community, a support network, and a platform for professional growth. Today, BeeHive hosts eleven companies and over sixty professionals, and it has plans for even greater expansion.
Bringing the North-South Divide Closer
A major challenge faced by BeeHive was gaining acceptance and understanding from the local community. At first, people found it difficult to understand BeeHive’s purpose, as it targeted companies from the north to open branches in the south. However, after an initial period of adjustment, the community has embraced BeeHive. In fact, local institutions often visit BeeHive and express amazement, asking, “Are we in London?” This response is a testament to the modern and innovative environment BeeHive has created, demonstrating that such initiatives can bring the quality and atmosphere of major cities to the heart of Sicily.
The initiative has bridged cultural and economic gaps between the north and the south, combining the resources and opportunities of Northern Italy with the talent and enthusiasm of Sicilian professionals. By creating this unique environment, BeeHive has successfully fostered a collaborative space where companies and individuals can thrive together.
A Replicable Model for Broader Impact
BeeHive’s success is not limited to Trapani—it represents a replicable model that can be implemented in other regions of Italy and even across Europe. Sergio highlights the importance of passion and a cohesive team in making this dream a reality. The BeeHive model provides a roadmap for others looking to create similar coworking environments that reduce regional inequalities and promote social inclusion.
Sergio emphasizes that the market truly needs initiatives like BeeHive. The social enterprise model they have developed is transparent, and they are eager to share their “secret recipe” with others. This openness and willingness to help others replicate their success further demonstrates BeeHive’s commitment to making a positive impact beyond their local community.
Staying True to the Mission
Despite the challenges, Sergio remains committed to BeeHive’s mission of creating opportunities in his home region. “If I wanted something easier, I would have chosen another market,” he says, reflecting on the obstacles they have faced. The satisfaction of creating meaningful change in Sicily and providing opportunities for young people to stay and thrive in their own land makes every challenge worth facing.
BeeHive is a testament to the power of social entrepreneurship and regional inclusivity. By bridging the north-south divide, creating professional opportunities, and fostering a culture of openness and collaboration, BeeHive has proven that the south can be a thriving hub for business, innovation, and social impact. It is a shining example of how a passionate team can take a vision for positive change and make it a reality, one coworking space at a time.
